Arrow directional: Thought to be Civil War period There was a 42nd Federal Enforcement Regiment (42 F E R) as the Confederate 42nd Virginia Infantry Regiment was called early on in the Civil War. This regiment was organized, and recruited for, originally in Staunton Va. in July of 1861. This sign came from a collector who shopped in the American South buying folk art, American Country and oddities in the day. I am very lucky to have this rarity come my way. The condition of this 36" L X 6" H. 'Arrow" sign is exceptional and well cut. This iron "directional" is actually quite amazing. There are nice remnants of old paint and actually some hard to decipher writing. The riveting is the way it should be for this period. The iron, and its 161 year old wear is right. It was perhaps a work project for a field location, made in the spare spare time of a soldier at camp, or maybe a commissioned piece. How it survived is a mystery. The stand is just for display. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/42nd_Virginia_Infantry_Regiment Great piece!
