This is a quite wonderful piece of American Folk Art. It is a hand carved long wooden chain (54") with inscribed carved text. It is almost like a flail; a farming tool used to thresh grain. It hails from Texas and I believe that it was crafted sometime around the 1920s or 30s, during the Great Depression. It reads "Be a good Ira Muns... There was an Ira Claude Muns who was born in Erath County, Central Texas in 1891. He worked in a lumber yard and may be the carver? Whoever made it had patience and great skill. A 54" chain is a lot of doin' The paint is original to the chain and yes it does have a break in one link. Often when one passes, on a linked chain or another piece of meaningful art the item is broken. Who knows. Great item.
