25-148. PA German stitch embellished show towel ca. 1844. Long homespun linen show towel with extensive decorative stitchwork on upper quarter and fine 11" wide drawn and weave networked bottom with stags, birds on stems and large floral urn The netting has open loop work and a tasseled bottom, with cotton thread stitching in red, pink, navy blue, green, olive green and yellow The makers name, Mary Martin, is stitched above the secondary line of sample letters in turkey red thread. The lower quarter sample section includes the maker's initials, snowflakes and flower urn illustrations. Measuring approximately 67” long x 18.75” wide. Attributed to Lancaster Co., PA. An excellent example of a fully embellished towel, with minor thread loss and a small (about 1inch) tear on one edge.
