25-138. A red, hand-wrought sheet iron, pierced “Revere” lantern. This unusually large example (15” high x 7”) features 2 opposing round lights, one with the access door, a heat/smoke deflector with loop handle at the top, cleated interior candle socket, and an additional external candle socket. The later ostensibly for use as interior lighting. This lantern has had an active working life and is in as-found condition. That doesn’t mean that it’s falling apart, but on the contrary, that it has had its share of knocks, bumps and repairs (e.g. resoldered hinges). There is some surface rust, and a history of red paint, but the lantern is solid with no holes. Found in New England and dating from the late 18th century.
