25-137. Barn Lantern with Candle Raising Mechanism
Price: $1,550
Sold by Phillips and Durkin Antiques
25-137. Very good wooden Barn Lantern, with the very scarce feature of the candle socket being raised by a wooden rod. The smoke / heat vent at the top of the lantern serves as the access port for raising to light or extinguish the candle. The four old / or original lights are all intact without breaks or cracks. It is in the remnants of a very old grayish paint over what appears to be the original red wash. The simple iron bale handle is original as it the rest of the piece. The Lantern is unusual in its form, compact size, and in the candle raising mechanism. The piece measures approximately 5.25” square by 9.75” high. It was found in Massachusetts and dates to ca. 1840.
