Lithograph published by F. R Whiting, New York. The print is a commentary on the abolition of slavery as it relates to Lincoln signing the Emancipation Proclamation. The three kittens are named on their collars Abe, Contraband (the term used to described enslaved persons who followed the Union army) and Jeff(erson Davis). Jeff's collar is a noose. The medicine bottle is labeled Lincoln's Blackstrap with directions to be administered immediately (the issuance of the preliminary Emancipation in September 1862) to be followed with a second dose on January 1, 1863, the date the Emancipation became effective. Framed in a handmade faceted, criss cross walnut frame. It measures 10 3/4" x 14 1/4" sight; 17 3/4" x 22" framed; A 1" x 2" piece of the margin has been torn from the upper left corner; otherwise, the print is in very good condition for it's age.
