26-113. An unusually large and boldly turned American wooden lamp stand or “tidy,” probably New England or Pennsylvania, dating to the late 18th or early 19th century. The broad circular top, intended to support a Betty or other grease lamp while protecting the table beneath, rests on a substantial baluster-turned standard composed of a series of compressed balls and ring turnings, above a heavy spreading circular base. The stand retains an old, black-painted, 19th century surface, probably later than the original surface, with appropriate wear and scattered losses. The unpainted underside exhibits considerable age, oxidation, tool marks, wear and scattered old insect evidence. Particularly appealing for its unusually broad proportions, strong sculptural turning and substantial construction. Approximately 9" high, 7" diameter at the top and 6¼" diameter at the base. Very good condition consistent with age and use. American, probably New England or Pennsylvania, ca. 1780–1820. (Betty Lamp Sold Separately)
