26-042. Here is a medium size, paint decorated box from New England. It is made of poplar, with butt joints and small square-head nail construction. The lid is attached with brass box hinges. The interior has rabbets which would have once held a small till. The box is painted in dark red. It is decorated on the top with a house in yellow ochre with red, cream and black accents. The house is flanked by two trees in black and green. In the foreground is a boy running and playing with a rolling hoop. He is in black pants, vest and hat with white ruffle shirt and stockings. The front of the box has a house on one side and a church on the other. They are done in the same colors as the top. There are black and green trees, and in the foreground two boys with hoops. The box measures approximately 10 inches long x 4 1/2 inches high x 7 inches wide. Found in New England, and dating from the 19th century. It is missing the till but otherwise in very good condition with lock and keep present.
