22-137. American Folk Art Watercolor Portrait of a Young Woman, Signed F.W. Fox, ca. 1835–1840. Charming pencil and watercolor portrait on paper of a fashionably dressed young woman, her dark hair arranged in the distinctive side rolls fashionable during the 1830s. She wears a pale blue-gray dress accented by a wide black belt and an unusually bold red-and-black checked neck bow. Particularly appealing naïve treatment of the sitter, with delicately modeled facial features and strong graphic costume details. Signed at lower right “F.W. Fox” followed by indistinct additional notation. American, probably Northeastern or Mid-Atlantic, circa 1835–1840. Housed in a later 19th-century walnut frame with geometric wood inlay and decorative outer edge. Frame 8"h. x 5¾"w.; sight approximately 6"h. x 3¾"w.
