23-095. American Folk Art Watercolor Portrait of a Young Boy, Dated 1839. A charming small watercolor and pencil profile portrait of a young boy, depicted in a vivid blue caped costume with high white collar, black neck bow, and dark waist sash. His finely rendered light-brown hair and the loosely painted flowers and foliage in the background provide particularly appealing details. The reverse is inscribed with the sitter's first name, "Edward," an indistinct surname possibly reading "Stuart" or "Stewart," and the date 1839. American, probably Northeast or Mid-Atlantic. Retains an attractive period figured-wood veneer frame, apparently original. Frame 5¼" x 5¼". Very good overall condition.
