26-014. American Cut-Paper and Gouache Silhouette Portrait of Clara Tittleton, ca. 1830. A charming full-length cut black-paper silhouette of a young girl, extensively embellished with gouache and gilt-colored detailing. Clara is depicted in profile wearing a fashionable wide-shouldered dress with short puffed sleeves and a ribbon waistband tied in a large bow at the back, while holding a delicate spray of flowers. Her elaborately arranged ringlets are particularly finely rendered with painted highlights. An old ink inscription on the reverse identifies the sitter as “Clara Tittleton.” American, probably Northeast or New England, ca. 1825–1835. Housed in a handsome period bird's-eye maple frame with contrasting rosewood corner inlays and brass ring hanger; the frame retains an old, though apparently not original, finish. Frame 7½" h. x 6" w. Provenance: Collection of Peggy McClard & Randy Segotta, Weare, New Hampshire.
