26-023. Diminutive American Folk Art Watercolor Portrait of a Young Girl, ca. 1840. A charming diminutive American watercolor and pencil portrait on paper depicting a young girl in profile, wearing a brilliant blue full-skirted dress with fitted bodice and decorated sleeves, a red necklace, white stockings, and black slippers. She holds a delicate flower in one hand, with a small floral sprig at her feet. The strongly colored costume, carefully delineated details, and simplified profile are characteristic of American folk portraiture of the period. Probably Northeast or Mid-Atlantic, ca. 1835–1845. Watercolor 3¾" h. x 2¾" w. Housed behind glass in a handsome period rosewood-veneered frame with gilt liner, 7" h. x 6" w.
