26-098. British Folk Art Genre Painting of an Impoverished Mother and Child, Signed J.H. Barlow, 1897. Gouache and watercolor on paper depicting a barefoot young mother and her son, the distressed boy wiping his eyes against his mother's apron while standing beside an essentially empty basket. The woman's outstretched hand and solemn expression suggest a scene of begging or poverty, a subject characteristic of late Victorian sentimental genre painting. Naïvely rendered with particularly appealing facial expressions, costume details, and strong narrative quality. Signed “J.H. Barlow” lower left and dated “Nov. 1897” lower right. In a period, molded wood frame. British, probably English or Scottish, 1897. Approximately 11¾"h. x 9¾"w.
