26-103. American Folk Art Watercolor Portrait of a Child with Kitten, ca. 1840–1850. Charming watercolor and graphite portrait on paper of a young child, probably a girl, seated upon an upholstered footstool and holding a kitten in her lap. The child wears a lace-trimmed dress and a red coral-bead necklace, traditionally worn by children as a protective amulet. A colorful patterned carpet beneath the stool adds an appealing domestic detail. Naïvely rendered with particularly delicate treatment of the face, hair, costume, and kitten. American, probably New England or northeastern United States, circa 1840–1850. Housed in a period oval walnut frame with gilt liner. Overall, approximately 13"h. x 11"w. Very good condition with even toning and modest age creasing.
