26-119. Attributed to William James Hubard (1807–1862), American Full-Length Silhouette of a Young Woman, ca. 1850–1855. Exceptionally appealing full-length silhouette portrait of a fashionable young woman, attributed to William James Hubard and the Hubard Studio, the reverse inscribed in pencil “Hubard Studio.” Executed in precisely cut black paper applied to a light ground and extensively embellished by hand with finely painted and gilt-toned details defining the sitter's hair, jewelry, neckline, fitted bodice, sleeves, hands and exceptionally full skirt. She holds a small book in her clasped hands, while a carefully rendered cast shadow beneath her feet gives unusual depth to the composition. The sophisticated combination of cut-paper profile and extensive painted embellishment is consistent with documented work by Hubard. American, circa 1850–1855. Housed under old glass in a period mahogany-veneered frame, approximately 9¾"h. x 7½"w.
