A wonderful and unusual paint decorated pipe box in complete original condition. The surface of the pipe box has a red painted or aniline dyed surface. The pipe box has gold paint decorated sides and a wonderful painted worden pipe on the front of the box. The top front of the box is also gold painted as it follows the scroll design. The pipe box has its original knob, square nailed construction and the bottom of the case is dovetailed. The drawer still has traces of gold paint that are very hard to see from wear. The drawer is lined with old Boston, Mass. newspaper and is dovetailed. The hanging hole shows good wear. Please note some loss running down the left side of the box. I have identified the area with black arrows in the photos. There is also a tight crack about half way down on the back of the box. The pipe box measures 17 x 6 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches. Circa 1840, American, New England.
