26-118. A wonderfully primitive American nine-tube candle mold on a pine stand, found in Pennsylvania and dating from the mid-19th century. The nine individually formed tin tubes are arranged in two staggered rows and pass through two horizontal pine boards mortised into the upright end supports and secured with square-headed nails. The ends are boldly and somewhat crudely shaped with stepped profiles. Clearly a product of vernacular, homemade craftsmanship, the mold retains considerable evidence of its hand construction, including irregularly cut openings and visible solder around the tube mouths. A later application of glue is present along one side of the upper board. The pine has a wonderful warm golden-brown patina with expected wear and early, inactive insect damage. The tin tubes remain in good as-found condition with minor oxidation, dents and irregularities. An unusually appealing piece of American domestic lighting equipment with strong folk-art character. Found in Pennsylvania, circa 1840–1870. Approximately 16½" l. x 5" w. x 12" h.
