This is an outstanding example of a 19th. century whirlygig. Antique carved wood and painted figure, 19th. century folk art soldier whirlygig. The figure is a polychrome figure depicting an early military soldier (resembling a revolutionary war “Red Coat” or Continental soldier) The figure is jointed at the shoulders with paddle-like arms intended to catch the wind and spin. This is a classic trait of a traditional American whirligig. The uniform consists of a red coat, gold buttons, white trousers, black boots and a distinctive bicorn hat–representative of a Revolutionary War or War of 1812 era. The weathered crackled surface showcases a beautiful original or early polychrome paint patina, typical of 19th. century American folk art. The whirlygig measures overall 27 inches, without the base it measures 23 1/2 inches. The base is an old piece of wood, not original to the whirlygig, with a diameter of 5 1/2 inches.
