American folk art, A Tin Uncle Sam Hat. Purchased quite a few years ago from Uncle Tom’s Antiques. Not sure I even want to part with it but then again it may not even sell. Just a fabulous piece of American folk art. Date this hat to the first quarter of the 20th. century. It is authentic and exudes the American spirit. The hat has its original painted surface of Red, White and Blue with White Stars. Please note how the rim is tinsmithed with many small cuts so that the rim fits right around the body of the hat. The tin can that creates the body of the hat has a manufacturers mark on the can. The mark is “CVMCO”, Cumberland Valley Manufacturing Company. tin can labels are recognized as authentic, early 20th-century food advertising ephemera. Often originating from the 1920s to 1940s, these labels are valued by collectors for their lithographed, colorful designs that showcase regional branding from locations such as Maryland. Of course this can has none of its original surface or paper label but it is interesting to know the history of the tin can. The tin hat measures 11 x 8 1/4 x 6 3/4 inches. A unique piece of American culture, history and patriotism.
