A lovely example of an early 19th. century spill holder. This spill holder is made of a Pumpkin Pine wood, it has the look of having a painted wash on the surface. I don’t believe that is so, I believe it is the natural patina of the wood that imparts this beautiful surface. The construction is with square nails. The spill is circa 1820 or so. The spill measures 14 x 3 x 2 3/4 inches. These spill holders are quite unusual to find, and were used to hold spill that was initially lit and used to transfer the fire,to the hearth, candles,or other forms of lighting. most have been destroyed with the onset of kerosene and later lighting forms. American spill holder.
