26-056. American, probably Mid-Atlantic or Northeastern. An unusual early lighting device combining a covered grease or “Betty” lamp with an opposing candle socket, the entire assembly adjustable vertically on a tall iron standard by means of a forged spring-friction mechanism. The standard terminates in a ball finial and rises from a broad circular drip or catch plate supported on three gracefully curved forged-iron legs. The Betty lamp retains its hinged cover and wick channel. Hand-forged construction throughout with a pleasing old, oxidized and somewhat pitted surface. Approximately 16 ¼ inches high. Along with a pitted surface there is a small hole in the top of the Betty Lamp, otherwise the entire piece is in good condition and working order.
