26-075. A very scarce, and very good example of an early tin gimbal (as opposed to trunnion) mounted, whale oil lamp. It consists of 2 rings pivoted at right angles, keeping the lamp horizontal in a moving boat or ship. Compleat with a free (not attached) iron or lead counterweight in the bottom of the font. This serves to prevent and control over swinging of the lamp during rolling seas. The lamp measures approximately 5 inches high x 6 inches in diameter at the base. There are repairs to pin holes in the bottom of the font, otherwise in good condition. Probably from New England and dating to ca. 1830. This is a truly hard to find example of an early tin gimbal-mounted whale oil lamp.
