26-121. Pair of Sand-Weighted Tinned-Iron Push-Up Candlesticks, circa 1820–1840. An unusually substantial true pair of early tinned-sheet-iron candlesticks, each having a tall cylindrical candle socket fitted with a brass-knobbed push-up ejector, a broad circular drip pan and a flaring, sand-weighted base. The separate sheet-iron elements are joined by soldered seams, with rolled lower rims and closed bottoms retaining their original weighting material. The exceptionally broad and heavy bases provided stability on a shop counter, office desk or worktable. Both push-up mechanisms remain in fine working order. The pair retains closely corresponding, naturally aged surfaces with expected oxidation, discoloration and minor wear. A closely related English example has been described as a shop or office candlestick, possibly employed when heating sealing wax. American or English, circa 1820–1840. Each approximately 10 inches high × 5 15/16 inches diameter at the base. Weights: 2 pounds 2 ounces and 2 pounds 3 ounces.
