26-123. Pair of American Folk-Art Watercolor Portraits dated 1846. A charming companion pair depicting a young gentleman and lady in facing profile, identified beneath their portraits on blue decorative scrolls as Jacob Shisler and, apparently, Rebecca P. Neill. He wears a dark coat with a blue waistcoat and white shirt; she wears a fitted dark dress with a lace-trimmed neckline, side ringlets, and a flowing blue hair ribbon. Their different surnames suggest a possible courtship or pre-wedding association, although their relationship has not been documented. Each presented behind glass within a black-and-gold oval surround in a matching period mahogany-veneered frame. Portraits approximately 6 1/4 inches high by 5 1/4 inches wide. Age-related paper toning and scattered spotting, with wear to the oval surrounds and cracks and losses to the frame veneers. An appealing named and dated pair with strong folk-art character.
