This is a wonderful example of an 18th. century Splint Light. The iron shaft and crimping mechanism is hand forged iron. The shaft is inserted into what I believe may be a Chestnut base, very hard wood. The table light was made to hold splint, small cut pieces of wood mostly used in the 18th. century. This was a basic lighting material at the time. A candle also fits nicely into the clamp for a more updated and current candle use. The light measures 8 3/4 inches tall and the base measures 4 x 4 1/4 inches.
