Hester Houghton Antique Sampler circa 1850

Hester Houghton stitched this striking schoolgirl sampler in the 1800’s. Hester did not date her sampler leaving no clue as to her place of birth, but the linen is course and faded showing appropriate age for that period. Flora Abbleby School Girl Sampler

Flora Appleby stitched this adorable schoolgirl sampler in the 1800’s. Flora did not date her sampler leaving no clue as to her place of birth, but linen is course and faded showing appropriate age for that period. Usually samplers this simple where stitched by the very young as a first effort to learn needlework. Flora stitched several types of alphabets and numbers into her sampler. The framed sampler measures 11 inches high x 10-1/2 inches width and has a nice gold frame to hold it. Such a wonderful, sweet sampler to add to a primitive display. Martha Whawell 1845 Antique Sampler

Martha Whawell finished stitching this wonderful sampler on June 3rd, 1845. Martha was born in 1834 to William and Hannah Whawell in Heage, Derbyshire, England and passed away in 1911 at age 77. Martha married Henry Adams in 1859 and had 8 children. The sampler is full of 12 bird motifs as well as several other animals The framed sampler measures 20-1/2 inches high x 20 inches width. The fabric it is stitched on is a linen. The some of the threads have faded to a nice warm beige but there are still some nice red and green colors in the sampler especially in the birds. There are no holes that I can see. The sampler is in its original birds eye maple frame and had been framed with the glass spaced from the sampler. Char;otte Tonkin Wright 1853 Antique Sampler

Charlott Tonkin Wright finished stitching this folksy sampler on January 8th, 1853. Charlott Tonkin Wright born in 1842 to Martin and Sally Wright. She was baptized Jan 14th in Paul Church, Cornwall, England. The sampler is full of great flower basket motifs as well as several alphabets, bands of stitching such as eyelets and backstitching. The framed sampler measures 24 inches high x 14 inches width. The fabric it is stitched on is a linen. The threads of the alphabet have faded to a nice warm beige but there are still some nice red and blue colors in the sampler. There are a few very small holes but the not noticeable due to the background line that the sampler is stitched to. Mary’s verse is lovely and reads “The moments fly a minute’s gone, The minutes fly an hour is run, The dey is fled the night is here, Thus flies a week a month a year”. The verse is from a book of poems published by Elizabeth Parker in 1837. The sampler has been conserved on clean linen with acid free UV blocking glass and a burl frame. Eunice B. Swan 1819 Sampler - New London CT

Eunice B. Swan stitched this adorable sampler in 1819 when she was 11 years old. The sampler with the frame measures 9-1/4 x 11 inches. The sampler is in a period frame and is mounted to a linen backing and framed with UV protective glass. Eunice was born on Oct 3rd, 1808 in North Stonington, New London, Connecticut and died on Oct 6th, 1870 (aged 62). Jane was born to Charles Swan Jr (1782–1868) and Cynthia Brewster (1774–1850) along with 7 other siblings. Eunice stitched 3 different alphabets onto her sampler as well as a verse “ Jesus can make a dying bed, Feel soft as downy pillows are; While on His breast I lean my head, And breathe my life out sweetly there.” The sampler has a small amount of toning in places. The threads used are mostly brown but there are some blues colors remaining. The sampler with no apparent holes. US Shipping is included in the price.

Jane Lucretia Wilson 1837 Plainfield, CT

Jane Lucretia Wilson stitched this adorable sampler in 1837. The sampler with the frame measures 12-1/2 x 14-1/2 inches. The sampler is in a period frame and is mounted to a linen backing. Jane Lucretia was born in 11 Oct 1823 in Plainfield, Windham County, Connecticut and died on 16 Nov 1872 (aged 49). Jane was born to Grafton Wilson(1791–1871) and Zilpha Spaulding Wilson(1796–1886) along with 6 other siblings. Jane stitched her sampler when she was 14 years old. Her sampler has a variety of blues, browns, and greens as well as 4 different types of alphabets and various motifs. The sampler is in good condition with the a few small holes and toning. Eveline Anne Savill March 23th, 1858

Eveline Anne Savill stitched this adorable sampler in 1868. The sampler with the frame measures 9-1/2 x 13 inches. The sampler has been conserved to a linen backing and framed with spacers and UV blocking glass. Eveline was born in 1860 in England and stitched her sampler with a variety of colors which still retain their brightness 150 years later. The verse Eveline choose for her sampler was part of a song from a book titled “The Delicate Songster, Or Ladies Vocal Repository. Comprising a Select and Elegant Collection of Songs 1795”. The verse reads as “The honest heart whose thoughts are clear, disguises and guile. Hearts neither fortunes frowning fear, Nor court her fickle smile.” The sampler is in good condition except for a small holes which do not deter from the sampler itself. Rebecca Cort 1808 Antique Sampler- Biblical Verse

Rebecca Cort stitched her beautiful sampler in 1808 at age 12. Rebecca Cort was born in 1796 in Brigham, Cumberland, England. This sampler has a wonderful verse from the bible Romans 12:9-21 the King James Version. Rebecca stitched fabulous satin stitched flowers that show the high level of skill of Rebeca's talent. The sampler is in its original burl maple frame but with UV glass installed to protect it. "Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good. Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord; Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;13 Distributing to the necessity of saints; given to hospitality. Mary Emma Kemp 1905 Antique Sampler

Mary Emma Kemp stitched this large sized wool sampler in 1905. The sampler is full of some great motifs such as birds, deer and potted flowers and includes a large red and white brick house. The sampler measures approx 28 inches high x 25 inches width. The fabric it is stitched on is a coarse linen. The sampler still has a nice light color to it and is in good condition , no holes. Mary’s verse is lovely and reads “My home, my own dear home, it is a happy place where smiles of love are seen on each familiar face”. Also she stitched “Go save our gracious king” after her alphabet. Sarah Jane Waters Hutton School 1883 Antiq Sampler

Sarah Jane Water stitched this small wool alphabet sampler in 1883. She signed it Hutton Roof School Jan 13. The Hutton Roof School was a charitable school run by the Church of England in Cumberland which is in the extreme northwestern England. The school closed in 1941. The sampler measures approx 14 inches high x 12 inches width. The fabric it is stitched on is a coarse linen. The sampler has darkened slightly over time but is in good condition with no holes. This sampler would look great with the right frame and would be a nice addition to any sampler collection or would be perfect for a reproduction sampler. Mary Ann Dewhurst Antique Sampler

Mary Ann Dewhurst stitched this large wool sampler when she was 17 years of age. The sampler is undated but it very striking. The sampler measures approx 25 high x 23.5 width. The fabric it is stitched on is a coarse linen. The sampler has darkened over time especially on the verse which reads " But will God indeed dwell on the earth, Behold the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee how much less this house that I have builded". Mary Lee stunning Solomon's temple Antique sampler

Presented for sale is one antique sampler stitched by Mary Lee, July 18th, 1847. This is a very large sampler measuring 27 inches long x 26-1/4 inches wide. The sampler is stitched with wool and is stunning. There is a large Solomon's temple that takes up most of the sampler with multiple levels and rooms. The top of the sampler has 2 very large flowerpots. The top is stitched with a verse that reads: Hear what the voice from Heaven For all the pious dead * proclaims Sweet is the savior of their names And soft is their dying bed The bottom is stitched with a list of items used to build Solomon’s Temple: Solomon employed 183,600 men, and was 7 years and 6 months in building the temple, he afterwards sacrificed 142,000 cattle Mary’s sampler is in great condition with minor toning. A search on Ancestry shows an Mary Lee, born in 1846, Ottawa, Canada. Please feel free to ask for additional photos .

Ann Swales Antique Sampler 11 years old 1812

Presented for sale is one antique sampler stitched by Ann Swales, 11 years old in 1812. The sampler measures 17-1/2 inches long x 16 inches wide. The sampler has a small light stain on the bottom left and some toning on the top left but the sampler is otherwise in good condition. Ann stitched a wonderful simple sampler with many motifs including several types of flowers pots and birds. The border is very intricate composition of different flowers. The sampler colors are a nice pleasing pastel yellows, pinks, blues and shades of browns. A search on Ancestry shows an Ann Swales, born in 1801, Helmsley, Yorkshire, England. Since this sampler is unframed it will be shipped rolled in a tube with acid free tissue paper. Please feel free to ask for additional photos.

E.B. On Time Antique Sampler circa 1820

Presented for sale is one antique sampler stitched by E.B. The sampler is English, not dated but I would estimate that the sampler was stitched circa 1820. The framed sampler measures 18-1/2 inches long x 15 inches wide. The sampler has some areas of loss at the edges but otherwise is in good condition. A very a striking piece. E.B. meticulously stitched parts of a a poem by Elizabeth Thomas (1675-1731) titled MIDNIGHT THOUGHT (ON THE DEATH OF MRS. E.H. & HER DAUGHTER). The poem is very poignant and starts out as such: Oh sacred Time! how soon thou'rt gone! How swift thy circling Minutes run! Oh Time! our chiefest worldly Good, If we employ Thee as we shou'd! And yet how few thy Value know, The sampler has wonderful motifs such as birds, crowns and flowerpots. The colors are still vibrant on many of the motifs. The sampler has been conserved, stitched to linen and re-framed in an appropriate frame with UV blocking glass, that matches the time period. Please feel free to ask for additional photos.

Girls in Balloon Dresses Antique Samplers

Circa 1850 Presented for sale two wool stitched antique samplers. The samplers are of girls in balloon dresses. The samplers have been framed together. They are conserved and stitched to linen, in a custom made birds eye maple frame. The sampler at the top is signed EM and has a girls in a reddish orange dress with a cute border and several small motifs including a set of flower pots. The sampler on the bottom is signed ED and shows a girl in a similar dress but with angels as the main motif. US shipping is included in the price. I except returns up to 2 weeks. If an item is returned 1/2 the shipping price will be deducted from the refund. The framed piece measures 21 inches long x 13-1/4 inches wide.
