For sale is a wonderful vintage folk art strawberry make-do pin cushion that I acquired from a sale in Pennsylvania, and that I'm sure was made there as well. It has a large central strawberry with 6 smaller ones dangling from the sides, all completed in red wool fabric and green wool yarn. For sale is a terrific antique naive folk art circus elephant stuffed toy that came from Minnesota, and may have been made there as well. The toy measures about 9 1/4" tall, 11 1/2" long, and 3" wide, and is in nice antique condition, with expected fabric wear, and its right front leg bends quite a bit because there is an area at the top where there is no straw, but I think that could be redistributed. For sale is a fabulous antique Pennsylvania folk art apple box centerpiece with naively painted images of a running horse on one side, and a deer on the opposite. The background color is a dark robin's egg blue, and according to the seller, the paint is milk based. The box has canted sides, and is constructed with handmade nails. In addition, there is the name "Johannes Spitler" written on one handle, and the year 1787 on the other. Based on my research, I am unsure if this is a work by Spitler, as it seems much more naive than other works I have seen. That said, it is an old piece, most likely 19th century. It measures about 12 3/8" long, 12 3/8" wide, and 8" tall, and is in nice antique condition, with nice signs of age, including paint wear, oxidation around the nails, etc. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions, or for additional photos.

For sale is a fabulous antique 19th century folk art painted dome top box with birds flanking an urn with what I think is a fruit tree on the lid, and a swag design on the front that I acquired from a collection in Pennsylvania. There is a note inside indicating that it was purchased at the Jim Burke November 1989 York, PA., show, and that it is similar to Bucher boxes, however, according to the seller, it is thought to be French. I don't know for sure, but I would certainly lean towards a European origin. There is additional painted decoration on the sides, and the back and bottom are painted blue. There is a small wire handle on the top, wire hinges, and the original key and locking mechanism are still in place. (The key hangs on a piece of wire on the interior, and I didn't attempt to remove it.) In addition, it is lined with paper. It is made of a wonderful old fabric in a grid pattern with images of fruit in some of the corners, as well as plus signs formed by dots inside the squares. I think that the drawstring is a shoelace, and the bag measures about 15" long and 7 1/4" wide, and is in nice antique condition, with some minor light brown staining on one side, and a couple of tiny black spots on the other, which might have been in the making of the fabric, although I don't know for sure. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions, or for additional photos.

For sale is a wonderful antique ca. 1840 English scroddleware pottery bank in the form of an Empire style dresser that I acquired from Massachusetts. It has reeded columns on the front, paw feet on the front, and all of the drawer pulls appear to be intact and original. The piece measures about 6 1/2" high, 6 3/4" wide, and 3 1/4" front to back, and is in very nice antique condition, with no chips, etc., but the right front paw leg has been reattached, barely noticeable at all, but mentioned for the sake of complete accuracy. In fact, I hadn't even noticed it until I examined the piece very closely. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions, or for additional photos.

For sale is a wonderful unframed antique, early to mid 19th century silk on linen sampler that I acquired in Indiana. I think that it is English, although it could be American. There are urns of flowers, trees, dogs, birds, and a single peacock above the apple tree, in addition to other images, as well as an intricate border. A cotton backing has been applied to protect the sampler. It measures about 16 1/2" 13 1/4", and is in nice antique condition, with overall toning, as well as evidence that it was framed in a previous life. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions, or for additional photos.

For sale is a naive antique, likely early to mid 19th century, unframed silk on linen sampler. I think that it is American, although I can't verify that so it could be English. There is a large house at the top flanked by trees and single flower stems, with the alphabet below that is flanked by urns of what I think are flowers. Below is a large urn of tulips, flanked by baskets or possibly urns that have single stem flowers, as well as 2 more urns of flowers, tiny trees, what look like very stylized single tulips, and 2 tiny what I believe are rabbits. The tiny trees and rabbits are a tan/light brown on the left, and almost the same color as the linen on the right, which makes them almost blend in. There is a triangular border, and the same design divides the piece approximately in half. In addition, the sampler has been sewn onto an ecru cotton backing. The sampler measures about 20 3/4" x 15 1/2", and is in nice antique condition, with light toning, and holes in the corners, as well as 2 others in the middle on the right which aren't noticeable because of the fabric backing. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with questions, or for additional photos.

For sale is a charming antique dated 1857 folk art watercolor portrait of a young boy dressed in red pulling his horse pull toy. In addition to the date, the painting is signed "W. Hopkines". In addition, it is housed in a nice old frame with a metal loop hanger at the top. The framed painting measures about 9" x 8 1/2", with sight measurements of 6 1/4" x 5 3/4". It is in antique condition, with overall toning and a few spots, a small tear in the upper right corner, and it appears that it was folded at one time before it was framed, but despite its flaws, at least in my opinion, it is very worthy of display. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions, or for additional photos.

For sale is a very nice antique 18th century primitive folk art wrought iron toaster that I acquired from a sale in Maine. It has nice curlicue designs, 3 feet that are riveted in place, and it swivels for toasting. The piece measures about 20 1/2" long and 13 1/2" wide, and is in nice antique condition, with signs of age and use including a dark patina, as well as minor rust and pitting, but it displays very well. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions, or for additional photos.

For sale is a rare and very early dated 1706 English silk on linen sampler that I acquired from a sale in Pennsylvania. It is the earliest sampler that I have had the opportunity of owning. It was made by Ann Axton, and there are many images throughout the piece including 2 images that depict people under a tree, a human image near each corner, many birds, lions, flowers, and more. In addition, there is writing near the top, as well as in the center near the bottom, although I really can't decipher all of what has been written. The sampler is housed in a fairly new frame, probably from the 1990's or so, and measures about 17 1/2" x 11 1/2". It is in antique but very displayable condition, with overall toning, and areas of loss, but still mostly intact. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions, or for additional photos.

For sale is a charming antique ca. 1860's-1870's flower basket quilt that came from Ohio. It is hand pieced, hand appliqued, and elaborately hand quilted in grid and feather wreath designs, and I believe it is thinly filled with raw cotton, as you can see the occasional cotton seed when the quilt is held to the light. The quilt measures about 78" x 76", and is in nice antique condition, with some minor wear on the binding, very light toning, and a few very light spots, not noticeable, but mentioned for the same of complete accuracy. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions, or for additional photos.

The piece measures about 13 1/2" tall, 10 1/2" long, and 5" deep, and is in nice vintage/antique condition, with a warm patina, but no significant flaws. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions, or for additional photos.

For sale is a graphic antique dated 1851 coverlet that I recently acquired, and that was previously in a New York collection. It is a double weave piece, and has a large center medallion, eagles, deer, birds, buildings, pears, leaves, flowers, and scrolls all around the medallion. There is a small empty box on one side, and on the opposite side the box has the initials "AMC", but I have no information on who the maker was. There is no center seam or fringe, and the coverlet measures about 90" x 87". It is in excellent condition, with a tiny pull or 2, and there is some very light toning on the lighter side of the piece, but no holes, rips, stains, or repairs. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions or for additional photos.

For sale is an authentic 19th century folk art make-do pin cushion that has been in my collection for several years. It is completely handmade, and there is a beautiful beaded floral design on the top, as well as tan velvet trim around the perimeter. The piece measures about 9" tall, and 4 1/8" in diameter on the base. It is in very nice antique condition, with nice signs of age including fabric wear, particularly on the velvet trim, as well as a few small holes in the cushion. There are a few stray threads on the top, but I don't see any missing beads. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions, or for additional photos.

For sale is a wonderful and huge antique folk art brown and black velvet starfish pin cushion or hatpin cushion that I acquired in Pennsylvania, and that I'm confident was made there as well. The reason I think that it may have been a hatpin cushion is because of both the size, and what looks sort of like a hat on the top. It is filled with either sawdust or sand, and measures about 10" in diameter on the bottom, and about 7" tall. It is in very nice antique condition, with signs of age including minor fabric wear, as well as one tear/rip, but basically very nice. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions, or for additional photos.

For sale is a terrific antique primitive combination spoon and mortar and pestle holder that I acquired in Pennsylvania, and that I'm sure was made there as well. It is painted a dark red color, which I think is original, or at least old. and there is a drawer in the middle with a metal wire ring handle, slots for 14 spoons, as well as what I think is a towel bar at the bottom, although I'm not positive. In addition, it appears to be made with old hand cut nails. The rack measures about 18" tall, 17 1/2" wide, and 3 1/2" deep, and is in nice antique condition, with wear to the paint, as well as nice craquelure, and there is nice oxidation around the nails. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions, or for additional photos.

For sale is a wonderful late 18th to early 19th century burl veneer tea caddy that I acquired in Pennsylvania, but that is most likely English. It has a sort of pyramid shaped lid with a carved rectangle on top, slightly canted sides, and bun feet. However, what makes it special is that is still retains its original key, mother of pearl escutcheon, and working locking mechanism. The piece measures about 6" tall, 7 1/2" long, and 4 1/4" wide. It is in nice, but antique condition, with some relatively minor restoration, and it looks like 2 of the feet might be replacements, as 2 have screws in the middle, and 2 don't. In addition, the lid doesn't quite fit flat against the box, but at least in my opinion, it displays very well. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions, or for additional photos.

For sale is a very endearing 19th century scissor cut valentine or love token that has been in my collection for a few years. It is rather naively done, with the main design being a circle of hearts with writing in sepia ink. It is in English, but much of it is rather hard to decipher, but 2 of the hearts say "This is a heart", and the center says "Here I goe around the ring that has no end". The piece has been placed on a black background, and housed in an appropriate, but fairly modern gold frame. The framed valentine measures about 14 1/4" x 13 1/2", with sight measurements of 12" x 11 1/4", and the piece itself measuring about 7 1/2" in diameter. It is in nice antique condition, with some toning, mainly around the folds, a few light spots, but no really significant flaws. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions, or for additional photos.

For sale is a charming antique early 19th century folk art watercolor painting that depicts 3 children and their dog under a cherry tree. One child appears to be picking cherries, and there is a basket of cherries on the ground. The boy on the right is holding what I believe is a buttocks basket full of oysters. The painting is housed in an appropriate, but fairly recent wood veneer frame, probably from the 1980's-90's, and is behind a double mat. The framed painting measures about 10" square, with sight measurements of 4 3/4" square. It is in very nice antique condition, with some toning and a few small brown spots at the top, but it displays very nicely. The paper backing is a new replacement. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions, or for additional photos.

There are no major issues. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions including requests for additional pictures.

For sale is a very sweet framed folk art scherenschnitte that depicts a bird tree. I think that it may have been made in Pennsylvania, but I can't completely verify that. The piece is signed "John Mahaffey", and is housed in an old gold painted frame. The framed piece measures about 8 5/8" x 6 7/8" with sight measurements of 7 5/8" x 5 7/8". It is in nice antique condition, with nice signs of age, but no significant flaws. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions.

For sale is a charming antique ca. 1840 painted silhouette of a girl holding a book. I was told that it was an unsigned Hubard piece. It is in a period walnut veneered frame with a metal hanger at the top. The framed piece measures about 9 3/4" x 7 1/2" with sight measurements of 7 1/2" x 5 1/4". The image itself is about 6" high and 3" wide. The piece is in very nice antique condition, with expected and appropriate signs of age, but no significant flaws. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions.

For sale is a wonderful antique German exotic bird pipsqueak/squeak toy in working condition that has been in my collection for a few years. The bird is made of composition covered in velvet, wool felt, real fur, and feathers, and sits on a wooden base with a paper bellows. The piece measures about 6 3/4" tall, the base is 5 1/2" long and 3" wide, and the bird itself is about 5 1/2" long. It is in nice antique working condition, although there are tears and repairs on the bellows. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions.

For sale is a wonderful antique 19th century folk art pantry/bandbox that I found in Ohio, but that was made in Pennsylvania. It is constructed with splints and wooden pegs. On both the lid and sides, there is a very stereotypical PA. Dutch style design of red tulips with yellow centers, and almost comma shaped leaves on the lid. The box measures about 17 1/2" long, 8 1/2" wide, and 5 3/4" tall, and is in nice but antique condition, with a dark aged patina, an area of missing wood on the top, as well as expected wear around the edges on both the lid and box. There is what looks like a crack on the lid, but I believe that 2 pieces of wood were used in its construction, as when you look on the inside, the line is very straight, and the grain doesn't quite match. In addition, there have been a few areas where nails have been added for reinforcement. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions.

For sale is a very nice antique folk art stumpwork 6 petal flower design table mat, or possibly small lap robe. Each block is completed on a variety of different fabrics, measures about 6 1/2" square, and there are 30 squares in total. The backing fabric is black wool flannel, I believe. The entire piece measures about 39 1/4" x 33", and is in very nice antique condition. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions.

For sale is a wonderful antique folk art watercolor fraktur bookplate with German writing and a sort of shield and tulip design at the bottom completed in red, yellow, green, and blue. I believe that it is most likely from Pennsylvania. It is dated January 26th, 1829, and has been placed on acid free backing. It is housed in an antique frame with a metal loop hanger, and measures about 9 1/8" x 6 3/8" with sight measurements of 7 1/8" x 4 3/8". The fraktur itself is about 6 1/4" x 3 3/4", and is in nice antique condition, with minor toning and stains, as well as minor wear around the edges. The frame is also in nice condition, and a new paper backing has been added. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions.

For sale is a wonderful antique dated 1838 watercolor fraktur bookplate with what I think is German writing, and a red and blue bird flanked by red and blue tulips at the bottom. I think that it is most likely from Pennsylvania, and has been placed on acid free backing, and housed in an antique frame. The framed piece measures about 9 5/8" x 7" with sight measurements of 7 5/8" x 5". The fraktur itself measures about 6 1/4" x 3 1/2", and is in antique but nice displayable condition, with minor toning and stains, as well as areas of damage around the edges. The frame is in good condition, and a new paper backing has been added. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions.

For sale is a wonderful antique early 19th century American primitive folk art double sided butter print. I think that it may have been made in Pennsylvania, but it could also have been made somewhere in New England, as that is where I acquired it. The large side depicts a radial sort of leaf design with stars in between each leaf, and has a sawtooth border. It measures about 4 3/4" in diameter and1" thick. The small side depicts a 4-petal flower with smaller flowers in between each petal, and a piecrust border. It measures about 3 3/4" in diameter and 1/2" thick. The entire piece measures about 2 1/2" thick, and is in antique condition, with significant signs of age and use including shrinkage and cracks. The carved surface of each feels used, not having sharp edges at all, and it looks like the piece may have been near a heat source at some point. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions.
