Wonderful dated schoolgirl embroidered sampler, wool on linen, “Martha Gaskills Work 1845” (the 4 is stitched backwards). In fabulous condition, measures in the frame approximately 18” tall by 19 1/2” wide. Very heavy period frame with lemon gold liner. The backing has old paper. I see a bit of common “toning” to a few areas on the linen, but no stains or missing stitches. I do note one very tiny thread break in the linen, towards the top of sampler, at frame center edge. Hard to see and mentioning for sake of accuracy. Found recently in the Hamptons, Long Island, New York. The girl in a blue dress, riding a horse, with a dog running behind; the floral border on three sides of the center motif. A very charming and uncommon original, design.
