For sale is a wonderful and very early silk on linen sampler that I acquired in Iowa. I don't know if it is American or British, although I would probably lean toward the latter. It was made by "Sarah Scou" and is dated 1759. In addition to the alphabet, in which each letter is repeated 3 times, there is a religious poem that says "Pray Thou To God That he may be inclind (sic) To grant the Health of Body and of Mind". There is also a row of strawberries and 3-leaf clovers(?) above the poem, as well as a strawberry border. The sampler is housed in an old but definitely not original, black painted frame with a gold inner liner as well as gold around the perimeter. It measures about 10 1/4" x 9 1/4" with sight measurements of 8 3/4" x 7 3/4". It is in nice antique condition, with overall toning, some areas being darker than others, but no holes, missing stitches etc. It should also be noted that acid free backing was added, as well as new paper backing and wire hanger. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions or for additional photos.
