Unusual pine slide top candle or storage box having mitered corners that dates to the mid-18th to early 19th century showing great form with a characteristic sliding piece of wood recessed just below the top. Exhibits early rose-head and square nail construction having a varnished surface along with straight kerf marks indicative of a pit saw. Half moon notched area located on the top allows for easy access to pull the wood section forward to gain access inside. Dark areas appear at random on the bottom case as well as expected wood loss and cracks. Back right corner has a fitted piece of wood that was likely added to shore up the difference in length but is not a repair. Some nail exposure as well. Well made and solid. Top area offers great display opportunities. Measures 15” across, stand 9 ¼” tall and measures 8 ¼” deep (front to back). More pictures available.
