Basket from Kankakee State Hospital in Orig. Paint
Price: 525
Sold by Albion Valley Folk Art and Antiques
For sale is a terrific vintage, possibly antique, handmade folk art basket that was made at the Kankakee State Hospital, purportedly by a man name Steve Kordyl. The facility was originally called The Illinois Eastern Hospital for the Insane which opened in 1879. The name was changed in 1910 and operated as such until 1974, when it became a facility for patients with developmental disabilities. The basket is made of willow, and retains its original red, green, white, and black paint. It is quite difficult to find baskets painted in 4 colors, and the use of willow is unusual. It measures about 15" long, 13" wide, and 11 1/2" tall including the handle. It is in nice vintage/antique condition, with expected signs of age and use, but no significant flaws. Please look carefully at the pictures, and contact me with any questions or for additional photos.
