In the 18th c food was stored in uncovered containers. Previously cooked food was sometimes topped with a layer of lard, butter, or oil. The only drawback was that these products were also edible and attracted insects and rodents as well as household pets. To solve the problem and keep the foods preserved, a wrought iron lid was sometimes made and the handle fashioned of an animal or fish. These lids were of various sizes to fit the jars that the food was preserved in. This lid has a handle fashioned in the form of a Fish? Whale and is 53/4 inches in diameter. It is peened on the bottom.
