C 1800 POT LID FISH HANDLE

Price: $225 includes shipping

Sold by Lynne Nelson Antiques

Last of my original wrought iron pot lids circa 1800-1850. In years past food was stored in crocks which were left open. Unfortunately, they were subject to being invaded by pets. rodents, and insects. To combat this intrusion the cooks at first covered the food with a film of grease which kept the food covered. The pests were pleased since they also enjoyed the "toppings". So the homemaker had covers wrought to act as a lid to the jars. Handles were fashioned as birds and or fish. This handle looks like a shark! The cover, as you see has some holes on one edge. The handled is peened. It has been cleaned with stove polish. It is guaranteed original! More photos available. The crock is for show only. It is not included. It is not for sale ( too costly to ship). The cover measures a bit over 7 in. In diameter.
