Rare 18th century canoe cup. One of the best I have owned. Carved very thin from maple wood. Wonderfully shaped with a flat bottom and shaped handle. 6 1/4” o/a with 3 3/8” bowl x 1 3/8” deep. Original untouched grungy surface. It has a hole in handle for a thong. If you look closely inside the bowl, there is an early detailed painting of a young girl in a dress with ribbons and red stockings and shoes with scenery in the background. The painting looks to have been done in the 19th century. Canoe cups would have been used by frontiersmen, voyagers or riflemen to drink water from lakes and streams. It would have been carried in a haversack or tied to belt or sash. No chips, cracks or hairlines.
