Antique 19th-Century Footstool with Early Coverlet

Unique footstool (c. 1830 – 1880) having a robust native hardwood frame featuring a charming hand-shaped scalloped cutout apron and retains original machine cut square nails. Top is comprised of a removable, padded, upholstered insert using a section of a traditional American geometric overshot coverlet woven with indigo wool and natural cream cotton. Coverlet top was fitted to the stool around1920’s – 1940’s evidenced by the flat, round-head steel upholstery tacks lining the underside. One small, localized area of minor thread loss on the lower right edge. Left hand side is missing a nail at the top along with joints showing a glue repair in the crevices. The front left side has a crack near the bottom just above the leg. Another tight crack is visible on the top edge over to the right. Wood loss is evident on the front right-hand side just below the edge and also on the left side near the top right edge. Age related separation to top joints. Good overall condition. Top lends great decorating opportunities for perhaps a teddy bear, cloth covered animals or a lone piece of early lighting. Stands 8 ½” tall, measures 12” across (right to left) and measures 9 ½” deep.
