Sold by Lynne Nelson Antiques

Exceptional small 18th-century hand-forged wrought-iron wall rack, with highly decorative pierced and scrolling ironwork. Measuring approximately 9½ inches high by 6 inches wide, this unusual early ironwork is constructed from hand-forged flat bar and individually formed scrolling elements, all secured with substantial hand-forged rivets. The arched frame is embellished with multiple curling terminals and pointed finials, surrounding a striking central pierced and pointed ornament. Three projecting hooks extend from the lower rail. The combination of elaborate scrolling, pointed elements, substantial riveted construction, and irregular hand-forged surface gives this piece remarkable character and presence for its small size. The iron retains an appealing naturally aged surface with visible hammer texture, oxidation, and surface irregularities consistent with early wrought-iron work. Purchased at auction and represented as 18th century. Exact origin and original function are uncertain, and I am offering it as an exceptional example of early decorative wrought iron rather than assigning an unsubstantiated specific use. Very good antique condition
