2 Wooden “Scotch Hands” Butter Paddles
Price: 45
Sold by West Pelham Antiques
When households churned their own butter, they used wooden implements (2) to press out the liquid (“buttermilk”) and blend in the salt to form the butter. These paddles were called “Scotch Hands” or Butter Paddles. This pair is 9” long and 2 5/8” at the grooved part. The flat side is beveled and the “ handles” are about 3 ¾”. They are in very fine condition: clean and without cracks, splits or splnters (but I still would wash them thoroughly if you plan to use them to shape your butter!).
