Original framed watercolor cat painting held under glass and hand signed by the late celebrated American folk artist Kolene Spicher (1964–2022), entitled, 'A Lazy Afternoon’. A 19th century, possibly walnut frame, with an interlining of a lemon gold appearance that the artist sourced herself (for her finest work), was chosen. Black paper and a twisted wire hanger do not coincide with the date of the frame and dictate a modern feature but are characteristic of a professional art conservator or gallery frame shop to securely fit the painting. Oversized signature "Kolene E. Spicher" and the handwritten title "A Lazy Afternoon" show slight variations in transparency and ink pooling typical of a hand-applied fluid medium (like ink or gouache). No date is visually present and I have not removed the painting from the frame. Painting is in excellent condition. One corner of the frame shows some loss along with cracks. Early square nails are present along with slight separation to the mitered corners. Incredibly, this frame can act as a shadow box per se as it has a deep ledge where perhaps a family of mice can reside. Measures 15” tall, 18” long and is 2 ¼” deep. More pictures!
