Just in time for autumn, nice coiled, mid to late 19th century Pennsylvania straw Rye Basket filled with huge locally grown Pennsylvania sunflowers (Also Included). This unique basket is taller in size compared to the more prevalent shorter versions. These types of baskets were fashioned from rye because they resisted rot and repelled unwelcome visitors. Women also used them in the kitchen for bread dough rising. Original surface of warm nutmeg tones. Some dark areas are present that appear at random but are more prevalent on the inside. Rim has some breaks to the splint weave. Straw is intact which is a rarity! It is a solid, strong and durable piece made to last! Basket can also be used for a cookie cutter collection and would make a great holiday display as well. Measures 11 ¾” across the top opening, stands 5 ¾” and is slightly out of round measuring 6” on the opposing side. Bottom measures 6 ¼” across by 6” front to back. Sunflower heads vary in size but measures 5” to 5 ½”. More pictures Available, just ask.
