Unique Primitive Early Lighting Shelf showing red wash finish on scrolled backboard edges sporting a “Make-Do” feature. The wide, extended platform was custom-crafted to hold larger early lighting devices such as lanterns. Original shelf was built with hand-forged nails during the late 1700s or early 1800s (1780-1820). Decades later, after substantial wear, it was adapted with the cast-iron reinforcement bracket featuring a decorative hook exhibiting an acorn finial perhaps used for a snuffer during the mid-to-late Victorian era (1860-1880), secured with period Flathead screws to keep it functional. This is a classic textbook example of rural American "make-do" ingenuity. Chip located on the pointed edge of the scroll along with a rough area on the top front edge that may have been the culprit of a wee mouse long ago. Abraded surface showing some wood loss as well as cracks appearing at random throughout. Evidence of “T” nail impressions on the back panel where nails once resided. Nice authentic oxidation on back side. Graduated candlesticks, such as the push up versions would make an exciting top visual display. Stands 13” tall, top 14" across & 6 3/4" deep. More pictures!
