Wonderful 1800s–1840 apothecary chest. Rt side features a flush, flat replacement board lending a "Make-Do" repair while the left side retains its original panel with mortise-and-tenon construction. Wire brads detail the repair, and cross-hatch nail heads were added around the 1950s to reinforce the back and bottom cases. Recently conditioned with finish-safe Liquid Gold. Bottom features massive, wide-board construction with heavily oxidized, light wood. Original drawers boast hand-cut dovetails, handwritten labels/numbers from a past owner, and internal square-block drawer stops to keep fronts flush. All drawers slide freely, though the bottom-right drawer is slightly persnickety. Original turned wooden knobs are fully intact. Age-related wood shrinkage has created a ¼” gap between the three back panels, with minor cracks near nail locations. The top shows cracks toward the back, and the front top edge has wear and a small chip. Expect random nail loss (empty holes), minimal wood loss to mortar joints, and minor scratches/chips on drawer fronts. Sturdy, well-built, and in good overall condition.
