Exceptional Western PA salt-glazed unmarked stoneware utility jar (c. 1870–1880) once used for butter, lard or preserves. Features semi-ovoid form with a thick rolled bolster rim made to secure either cloth, canvas or oiled leather stretched tightly over the top then tied firmly around the neck with twine. Showcases a crisp tooled shoulder decoration with a single incised groove and a raised accent band. Heavy orange-peel exterior accented by 3 bold freehand cobalt blue rings, a desirable kiln-induced green copper oxide blush on the lower case, and a rich Albany slip interior. Earthy, slate grey tones are beautifully interrupted by warm, toasty accents of kiln flashing. Tiny remnants of red paint residue visible near the neck. Bottom shows original wire-release marks. Slightly "out of round" top rim along with minimal base wobble from its wire removal. Minor factory pockmarks and honest glaze flakes along the outer bottom edge from being detached from the kiln floor. Great condition—no hairlines, repairs, or body chips.
