Hard to find Mule Chest, c. 1810–1835 offering small-scale form originating from a southeastern PA estate. Features a single lower drawer and is constructed from beautifully grained walnut casing exhibiting rich patina. Assembled using early machine-cut iron nails. Hand-planed pine interior drawer used as secondary wood. Rustic rabbeted and nailed drawer construction is typical of utilitarian rural craftsmanship. Classic bootjack ends integrated into side panels. Piece has most likely been refinished at one point to stabilize and highlight the exciting grain. Features an early "Dutchman patch" wood repair near the right hinge secured with later brass butt hinges for full lid functionality. Drawer pull is a recent period-correct replacement boasting a turned wooden knob that has been doweled into the drawer front. Other “as found” brass knob will accompany this purchase. Drawer does not sit entirely flush against the case due to a slight gap. Hinged top has experienced dark areas sprinkled at random. Deep scratches are also present especially on the legs. Overall condition is very good and awaits your personal decorating touch! Stands 10 1/2", 12 1/2" wide and 8 1/4" Deep.
